Graduate Program

Upon Admission as a Graduate Student (Salary and Responsibilities)

Initial decisions about admission to the graduate program are generally made by the end of February. At that time the Department is authorized by the graduate school to make a certain number of fellowship offers (generally four) to fill our three slots. Applicants ranked lower than fourth are generally neither accepted nor rejected until all slots are committed.

All students accepted into the graduate program are offered the identical financial package. This consists of a first-year fellowship, which pays tuition, fees and a stipend of $15,600. In years 2, 3 and 4 of the program, students in good standing are offered a Teaching Assistantship that pays tuition, fees and a stipend approximately equal to the fellowship stipend.($1385/mo.) In return, they teach one course per quarter, either as a TA in a literature or culture course, or as a section leader of 1st or 2nd-year Russian.

Our students find that this package is one of the best parts of our program. Because everyone has the same financial deal, there is no incentive for students to compete against each other for financial support. Instead, they feel free to take the intellectual risks that make graduate school worthwhile, and to learn from and help each other. We have found an unusual amount of camaraderie among our graduate students and attribute it in part to this financial arrangement. The graduate school sponsors a dissertation-year fellowship competition, and our students have generally been able to secure funding from this source.
